Rethinking store design

As connected customers rebalance how they shop to tap into the benefits of ecommerce, retailers need to rethink the store. This southern China supermarket design is – literally – an outside the box solution.

The actual supermarket is pushed to the lower level so that its roof can be offered as a terraced garden “retreat” complete with a café and retail stores that face out to the street.

We’re not sure what the actual store experience would be like, but writing for FastCo.Design, Sammy Medina challenges that “supermarkets lack the ambition to rise beyond their basic function.” So here’s an attempt to utilize the space inside and around the actual structure to fully engage shoppers and establish the store’s relevancy as a positive influence on life in the 21st century.

Not everyone will agree with this particular vision, but it does provoke the kind of innovative thinking that can elevate the customer experience to a whole new level via intentional design. What do you think?
