The vegetarian and vegan trend is growing. Every day, more than 2,000 people become vegetarian, with the current numbers reaching one billion.
Because more people are eating vegan and vegetarian, the organic sector is increasing as well because the two sometimes go hand in hand. Vegetarian and vegan restaurants are popping up internationally and home cookbooks becoming more popular. In Germany, a first ever vegetarian cafeteria, opened its doors in 2011. It exclusively uses vegetarian ingredients and has a high ratio of organic products. Even those who aren't vegetarian are starting to use more meat alternatives than before.
Veganz—a vegetarian and vegan supermarket also in Germany sees 500 shoppers daily. The company hopes to have a total of 21 supermarkets by 2015 across Europe in places like Prague, Essen, Warsaw, Amsterdam and Rome.
With an increase in vegetarian and vegan consumers, BIOFACH, along with VIVANESS, is introducing the vegan product category at its Novelty Stand for the first time during the Trade Fair for Organic Food, which is scheduled to take place from February 12 to 15.
Attendees of the event will be able to find new products from Germany and abroad, at the Novelty Stand. During the event, vegan delicacies will compete for the Best New Product Award.
