According to Eater, the latest trend in restaurant design is imitating the feel of home. Some space owners are even going beyond the homey restaurant design trend, copying the design of a specific room in an actual house.
“I think a little bit of it is that they want to create this nostalgic feeling for themselves or for the guest, to evoke something that was part of them growing up,” said Allison Cooke, senior designer at CORE DC.
One owner, José Andrés, asked that his bar be completely devoid of visible stainless steel. He preferred the design to evoke a modern, European-influenced home.
Cooke uses tricks like installing softer, indirect lighting and upholstering with worn fabrics. One customer even asked her to make the restaurant “feel like our grandmother’s kitchen.”
