French retailer Auchan is reported to be close to entering the Indian market through a partnership with the Landmark Group. The move would reportedly take the form of a franchising agreement, which would help circumnavigate India's restrictions on investment in multi-brand retail. Landmark currently operates under a similar setup in the country with SPAR International, with Landmark's Max subsidiary having run outlets under the SPAR banner for the past five years. However, in May 2012 the two firms revealed that their partnership would come to an end after 31 December, 2012, with SPAR choosing to go it alone in the market. The deal could therefore see Auchan replace SPAR as the firm's principle international partner in the market.
