So now you’ve decided to work on your health by going on a diet, starting with cutting down on your consumption of sugars and grains. Doesn’t it seem like the entire food market is against you? Everywhere you look, the foods are either highly processed or screaming ’sugar-loaded’ or ‘high-carb.’ Even your favorite sauce contains a huge amount of added sugar. Even the restaurants seem to be against you, too. You could quiz the waiters all you want about the items on the menu, but when they are served, you will find yourself with a large side serving of fries or greasy garlic bread. There seems to be no hope, is there? But I feel a change coming. People are coming to their senses, albeit rather slowly. Proof of that is the emergence of these new healthy foods that have no grain, are low in sugar and just taste so good.
1). Low Sugar Cereals. If you haven’t tried Breakfast cereals without sugar before, then you are missing out. No grains or sugar are used in making them. Instead, they contain plenty of fibre and are made from flax and almonds. They also contain plenty of protein and good natural fats. You can serve this just as you would any other normal cereal. Just add some milk or, if you want to be extra healthy, try almond milk or coconut milk. There is even a brand of milk that combines both almond milk and coconut milk. Or you can also eat the cereal by itself. They are the perfect takeaway snacks especially for people who are always on the go.
2). Kale chips. Sometimes we are looking for a simple and quick snack that does not have sugar, chocolate or gluten. Kale chips came into existence one or two years ago. Now they are available in stores, among the whole foods. They are just dehydrated kale pieces. Most of the chips are salted and have small almond chunks on them for extra flavor and texture.
3). Desserts Low in Carbs. Got a craving for zero carb desserts while on a diet? Look no further! Now there is a low carb muffin mix that you can buy, and they contain absolutely no grains or gluten. Just add eggs and butter to the dry mix and bake. Enjoy the aroma of muffins wafting out of your oven. Your blood sugar levels won’t be affected by eating these muffins, so you don’t have to worry about feeling sleepy or nodding off. That makes them a carry-anywhere type of snack. I often make 12 in one go and keep them in the fridge. Then I can take one or two with me to work or to school.
4). Stevia flavored sodas. I have no beef with the sweetener sucralose but, like most people, I want a sweetener from natural sources and not subjected to intensive and extensive processing. Stevia, a ‘natural’ sweetener, is famous for its zero-calorie content. If you’re craving soda, but can’t afford to take in the calories or the sugar, then you should try the large variety of sodas that are now flavored with stevia. Examples of these sodas are Zevia and Blue Sky. They can be bought from many supermarkets these days.
Do not limit yourselves to these options, though, because there are still a lot more low-sugar and sugar-free food products out there, but let’s save them for another article, shall we?
