Program provides farm-fresh food for seniors

A western Massachusetts farmshare group was in Holyoke Wednesday to wrap-up their program for seniors in the city.

Farmers and members of the Community Involved in Sustaining Agriculture--also known as CISA--held the last farmshare distribution of the season at Holyoke's Council on Aging.

This program offers fresh produce from local farmers during the peak growth season at a discounted rate for the seniors.

Simone Rodrigues of Holyoke says that the program has helped her save money.

“You pay a one-time small fee to be in the program, and then you get all these vegetables right through the summer. So it has certainly helped my food budget a great deal,” Rodrigues said.

Joan Leahy of Holyoke says that the quality of the local produce has been great.

“They're a lot fresher than any vegetables you can buy in the store, so they keep longer,” Leahy said.

This seasonal program lasts 10 weeks during the summer.
