Digital Food System To Instantly Show Quality & Freshness Info

When grocery shopping, it's hard to completely trust expiry dates to ensure you truly get fresh and unspoiled food.
Now Korean researchers are giving consumers the ability to check the real-time status of their supermarket purchases with a single snapshot.
The Korea Food Research Institute has developed a new food monitoring system that places Quick Response Bar Codes, or QR Codes, and wireless sensors onto food products.
The digital sensors continuously measure the time and temperature ranges of the product from the day it's packaged to the day the product is opened or unwrapped.
The information is sent to a central database where consumers can quickly call on a detailed history of the food by scanning the attached QR Code.

The food institute says the dynamic food distribution system, or "U-Food System" has a more than a 95-percent accuracy rate in monitoring any change in food quality.

[Interview : Kim Byung-sam, Senior Researcher
Korea Food Research Institute ] "This technology is expected to expand not only into the food industry but also into the delivery and export of food."

The research team is confident that the U-Food system will gain momentum and soon launch into international markets as the world's first smart food-tracking technology for consumers.
